Bridging the Gap with Touch Screen

How we interact with computers can impose significant changes to the learning curve and touch screen laptops are a great way to teach people to use computers more intuitively. Despite the many years of exposure, there remain many intelligent people in developed areas of the world who are barely computer literate. A majority of them are users who know their way around just enough to get the job done. There is also a surprisingly large fraction of the United States population that does not have a computer. For those households that are not technically inclined to discover how far technology has come, they risk handicapping their young children who will eventually have to catch up with the rest of the world when they enter the workforce.

Many people who have very little experience with computers feel little or no inclination to learn if their job did not require it. Most office workers today know just enough to do their job and that is because they are forced to learn. Other jobs, particularly some blue collar jobs, require little or no computer interaction. The reason for such a barrier to using is a computer is the interface. Even with the invention of a computer mouse and cursor, it is still not a natural way for us to interact with our environment. Pointing with our fingers and grabbing, pulling, or tapping is something that everyone is born to do. That is why more touch screen computers can open up the world of computing to those who were held back by the way we traditionally interface with them.

As significant develops have been made in the field of touch screen technology, we are beginning to see cheaper means of production which will make touch screen laptops and computers that much more readily available. The focus has been on improving the quality of the screen such as resolution and brightness which, with new touch recognition systems, are being quickly developed. This also explains the quiet invasion of touch screen interfaces into our daily lives. Game systems and GPS navigation units are consumer products that have been notoriously using touch screens. Since the system is so intuitive we don’t realize how often we interact with touch screen devices every day.
