Business intelligence is an extensive array of skills, applications, technologies and practices that improve the use of information to support decision making. The need for appropriate information is an essential part for any organization. To come up with this appropriate information, and to put this information in the hands of the decision makers, an organization should have a solid business intelligence (BI) system in place.

One way to implement this type of system is through the use of a business intelligence road map –a strategy that entails assessing the information needs of the organization and its key business objectives. The roadmap serves as a guide for how the information will be used and for what solutions will be distributed. The BI initiative will use this general guide to determine priorities, improve communications between the staff involved, define and align key objectives across units and among leaders, and transform data into a useful information that can support the decision making process.

The BI roadmap is a just framework to guide the organization on the steps to formulate and implement a project. This is a visual guide to develop efficient business intelligence applications that support decision making. This BI guide should be presented in a clear and comprehensive manner and it should provide directions, policies, standards, and best practices to make sure that the business intelligence analysis and reporting meet the expectations of the organization. Specifically, a good roadmap should cover data management, governance of best practices, project management, and metrics management.

A good roadmap should be presented as a step by step process- from strategic planning to selecting various technologies to be used and evaluating applications that were released.  The step by step process of a BI roadmap will result in an effective business intelligence strategy.

The six steps or stages to attain an effective business intelligence project are justification, planning, business analysis, design, construction, and development. Each development step has its own major activities, roles, responsibilities, and benefits. The technical materials involving this process are presented in tables, diagrams, and graph in order to clearly state their relevance.

If an organization has already adapted a way to manage data, it will be in a good position to face the challenging competition of this generation. An organization will be able to match its competitors with the appropriate utilization of business intelligence applications.  With a business intelligence roadmap, an organization will be able to achieve effective project planning and decision making.
