Finding a physically pleasing camera that has all the features you want is fairly easy. The research you do on line and the specifics you hear from sales people where you are looking will all be optimistic because they want to sell you a camera. This is the best reason for you to look a little deeper and find real owners of the style and brand you think you want.
Underwater camera reviews will tell you how they actually work under the circumstances they are used in. If the owner goes through a lot of rough places, their gear gets dropped or things happen that would normally cause damage to the camera happens then you want to know how the product held up to that abuse. It is important to take the reviews as they are meant. When you find repetitive weaknesses in the product you can probably take this to heart.
When picking a water proof digital camera you will read a lot of hype. It is the advertisers job to tell you all the cool stuff the camera can do. There are lots of good products on the market that will work well for your needs but when paying the high end prices it is also very important to know if there are specific weak points to be aware of.
One specific camera, the Canon Sure Shot A1, is a well sold and talked about piece of equipment. In reading the reviews it is gleaned that the seal on them seems to be the weakest point of the entire thing. It works well, it takes great pictures but in the end one owner said a single grain of sand on the seal flooded the entire thing and they were out a great and expensive camera.
Another such item is the Nikon Nikonos V. It is a high end underwater digital camera that did not sell as well as hoped. Though it is a fine product the thing most complained about was the amount of maintenance it required. One person actually had flooded it and had to get it completely serviced. He said their customer support also was not what it should be for the price paid for the product.
Until you have heard both sides of the story on any piece of expensive equipment you should hold off buying it. Great items are available in all genres of consumer goods but caution is the best friend you have when it comes to something of this much importance. Always check out the stuff you want. Toys are great but only if they really do what the manufacturer says they can.
