The web has seen a big increase in programs offering laptop computers for free. This article covers some of the key small print conditions in these programs that make these companies their money and catch out many applicants.
There are many types of free laptop deals around these days and they generally operate by getting you divulge a lot of information, sign up to additional sponsored programs and/or refer others to the program.
One general scenario with these schemes is that laptop computers are given out to you after you (a) buy into a sponsored program and (b) get a number of colleagues/referees to join the sponsored program too.
This is fraught with problems. To start with you normally have to buy into the sponsored offer making the free laptop anything but free. Secondly, you would need to contact an awful lot of colleagues to get the required amount of referees who would also sign up to the program (this results in chain emails/mass emails in an attempt to garner the requisite amount of references).
Other types of programs have variations on this type. Some programs drop the ‘referees’ condition but insist on you yourself signing up to a greater number of programs. Each of these have their own costs (signup, monthly subs, etc.).
One variation on the program conditions seeks more personal information from you (health, financial, interests, family, etc.) which these companies can sell on to third-parties as market research data or sales generation leads. This can cause an avalanche of spam mail and sales calls, with your personal data being shared with dozens, if not hundreds, of other firms.
Not all programs offering free laptop computers are alike so be sure to check the terms and conditions before committing. While there are some hoax schemes online there is also many legitimate ones too.
