The Nintendo Wii game system is a magical gaming device that lets you hold a controller and transfers your movements via the controller to the TV screen. But how does that work? It’s actually quite simple, even after the addition of the Wii Motion Plus. To begin, let’s first explore the Wii itself.
The box on your shelf is basically a DVD player, but it does not play movies or albums, it plays games. If you have some Nintendo Game Cube games, it will play those. Anything else, such as games from Genesis, NES and SNES have be downloaded from the Nintendo store if you want to play them on your Wii.
The other main parts to the Wii gaming system are the Wii wireless remote controller (WiiMote), which contains an accelerometer, and a sensor bar which you have to place near your TV. The sensor bar reads the data from the accelerometer inside the WiiMote and tells the game what you’re doing. Other common items that utilize an accelerometer are digital cameras that flip the picture when you rotate the camera, or a touch screen phone that changes from landscape to portrait when you turn the phone from sideways to vertical. It’s the same technology.
Recently, Wii came out with another add-on that they call the Wii Motion Plus. Bundled with the Wii Sports Resort, you’ll find it improves the accelerometer greatly and your motions are replayed to the screen with even greater accuracy and detail. Small changes in rotation and depth of field are recorded with finer detail as well.
Some very well-like Wii accessories utilize this technology too. The Balance Board, for example, which shipped with Wii Fit will report on the movements your body is making while you are on it. Originally, it was just supposed to be an exercise game accessory, but now it can be used for snowboarding, dancing, yoga and skateboarding games, to name a few.
Wii Music and Wii Sports are some other games that have special accessories that enhance game play. When playing golf, for example, you can use a golf club with the WiiMote inside it for a more fun experience. Baseball bats and tennis rackets are also available; these accessories are made out of foam or plastic for safety.
Now that you know how the Wii gaming system works, it’s not quite so magical is it? However, it’s still a lot of fun, especially when put together with a lot of accessories and some friends!
