Internet Addiction

Is addiction to the Internet and your computer a real problem? According to some recent studies it might just be. “Peter Mastroianni said over one-third of the 116 students surveyed said their computer habit was the top reason for their struggles,” but not all experts agree about the possibility of being addicted to your computer.
Most studies done including the one by Peter Mastoianni at the State University of New York state that there is a definite addition. “The American College health Association’s 2004 National College Health Assessment that surveyed 47,000 students showed that 13 percent of them said computers significantly hindered their performance in courses.”
So who is susceptible? Both men and women are susceptible and it isn’t something students are worried about. “Anybody can get pulled too far into it because it’s not something they ever think they have to be careful about,” says Mr. Mastroianni and according to Nick Yee, a Stanford University graduate who did a study on 35,000 gamers said that it happens to some of the most “high-achieving students — not slackers.”
The main problem is there is no easy way to tell if someone or even yourself is addicted to computers. Susan Lantz says, “that it is even harder to find a solution to the addiction then it is to recognize.” Some students like Matthew Small recognized the problem themselves. Matthew saw a log showing how many hours he had spent online in a given period and that was his wake up call, but all students might not be that lucky. How much time do you spend online?
