Personal computers are always in danger of suffering damage from lack of due attention. How many times have you seen or have heard of a laptop being spilled over with coffee or tea? That’s because internet is such a big part of our life that we cannot even have a breakfast without logging on to Myface on the laptop meanwhile. When you’ve just woken up chances are you won’t be fully alert and tipping that mug is so easy.
Laptop repairs are not cheap so you should first of all make sure you don’t put any sort of liquid next to your computer. This is crucially important as liquids and electronic components don’t get along well. If you spill something in your laptop, first of all unplug the charger and take the battery out as fast as possible, but without risking any more damage than what’s already done. Mac users with integrated battery are out of luck here, they cannot remove the battery so they’ll have to shut down the computer.
Second, don’t eat in front of your computer. Yes, you probably heard it a hundred times but I’m going to explain why. Breadcrumbs can and will get into your notebook keyboard and while it’s not making the unit stop, it definitely looks disgusting and lowers the price of your notebook if you want to sell it. Cleaning a keyboard is a relatively easy task but for those who haven’t disassembled a notebook in their life may be an uncircumventable. Also breadcrumbs can scratch or damage screen in closed position. Short version: don’t do it.
When you use your notebook make sure you discharge the battery at least twice a week, that means if you mainly work by your desk, you probably have the charger plugged in 7/24. That is a wrong idea and damages recent lithium ion batteries. Once in a while unplug the charger and let it run on battery until it tells you it needs a charger. It helps prolong the lifespan of the computer and batteries are not cheap to replace.
Also make sure when working with the charger plugged in that the cable is not in the way and you know where you’ve left it. Tripping in the cable is the #1 cause of damaged DC jacks, which renders the computer useless until replaced. It’s not overly expensive but paying some attention can save you from a $30-$50 bill at the laptop repair service.
