Purchasing a new laptop can present you with a plethora of choices. Many brands, styles and specifications are available to purchase. Laptops have become cheaper over the past few years.

There are many brands to choose from, most of the common brands will be reliable and offer a vast selection of laptop computers. The smaller brands are best to avoid for a first time computer purchase, they are not so mainstream so there is less information available on them and less repair which can be needed if you have an accident with the laptop.

When purchasing a laptop you want something that will last a while. The better specifications in your laptop the longer it will take to be obsolete. Make sure to get something mid grade if you are looking to save money, cheap laptops are made with less quality. It is better to buy a little more expensive laptop and have something that is fast and reliable for a long time.

If you are on the go a lot, or have 5 classes in a row at school, battery life may be something that is important to you. Cheap laptops come standard with a 1-2 hour battery life. If you purchase a netbook you will be compromising performance for a great battery life, and in some cases that is what will be needed.

The size of your laptop also needs to be taken into consideration, if you are running around campus for hours a day you will not want to carry a large thick laptop, you want something light and with good battery life. However if you are only at home and move your laptop to the couch often maybe a larger more performance driven laptop will be necessary.

Mainstream brand name laptops will come with standard warranties. When purchasing from large retailer they will often offer service plans and warranties with your laptop, if you are not sure how to fix a computer or are not sure how to remove a virus its best to purchase a good service plan.
