Reimage Review – One Solution For Fixing A PC Which Cannot Boot Up Correctly

Maintaining back-up copies of the registry file is an important best practice in scheduled PC maintenance. In the event of the registry becoming corrupted and stopping Windows from booting then the following sequence of steps should be performed to attempt repairs. The steps finish with a Reimage review as one automated option to consider when all else fails.

While updating an old desktop recently, clearing out some space by removing rarely used software, the PC threw an exception after a full reboot with the code 0x80072EE7. Research pointed to this meaning the registry file had been corrupted. I brought together the following actions as a possible sequence repairs that others had used successfully.

-    The issue may be limited to your accounts hive (a subset of registry keys relating to a Windows account) so attempt logging under a different user-name. If it works then you can salvage your data or roll back the registry file (if older versions are maintained). If this fails, proceed to the next step.

-    Attempt starting Windows in safe mode. If it works then, as before, try to salvage data or rollback the registry file. If this fails, proceed to the next step.

-    Use the Windows boot disks to start the PC and run all available scans. This will be effective if the registry fault is due to disk or hardware issues. The downside though is that it may be unable to repair hardware faults. If this fails, proceed to the next step.

-    Resort to third party registry repair software.

I opted to use Reimage repair software. With this product it was possible to download a ‘boot’ application, burn it to CD and start the PC with this disk. Once logged in, Reimage scans for registry, OS and application faults and reports back. My report had over 80 faults (some of which seemed minor, but many related to applications I had removed) which the product proceeded to fully repair.

Maintaining copies of the registry should be a crucial part of your regular computer repair and maintenance schedule. Hopefully you shouldn’t ever need to use them but having them handy could make repairs all the more easier.
