Tips for Buying a Computer

Nobody looks forward to buying a new computer, unless you are a computer geek that dreams about the latest processor or graphics card. Most of us know just enough about computers to get done what we have to. For some, this is simply sending and receiving email. Some do a little more than this, but the point is that the majority of us don’t understand what makes a computer fast or why some computers are better than others. Hopefully, I can shed some light on a few things that can help you purchase a new pc in the near future.

The most important thing is to understand what your purpose for owning a computer is. If all you do is read email and surf the net from time to time, you could get by with a lot less than most people will want you to believe. It doesn’t take much computing power to surf the internet, watch videos, and read email. You don’t need the latest version of Windows either. Windows XP runs much better on slower computers than vista or windows 7. This will save you the cost of needing a faster computer just to run Windows. A 1000 ghz processor with about 512mb to 1 gig or ram will be plenty as well. A lot of newer operating systems require double this just to operate. A 40 gig hard drive would probably suffice as well. You can find computers like this at any cheap computer repair shop around your local town.

If you are into computing a little more and do a lot of editing and gaming, you will need a higher end machine. I am still a fan of Windows XP even for this because it runs well and requires less of a computer to operate, which saves money and will still do all of the things you want. Processor speed, ram, and graphics card are what is important here. The faster the processor, the better. I would get at least a 1.5ghz, but really try to go higher than this. If you are going to run Windows XP, 2 gigs of ram will do. Newer versions of windows are RAM hungry and I wouldnt go any lower than 4 gigs. The graphics card is similar to the processor, the faster and more expensive, the better. If you are a big gamer and want the best graphics for your games, go higher than the recommended hardware on the game box.

Don’t let the man at the home pc repair store talk you into more than you need. Most of the time they will help you and can make suggestions on what you need to buy. Just keep these tips in mind and you should be fine.
