Why Using an Ebook Reader is Better Than Reading From a Smartphone

We have had handheld devices with the capability of storing digital data since the introduction of PDA’s(personal digital assistant) in the ’90s. With changes in technology these PDA’s have morphed into smart phones that are not only capable of making phone calls but many other tasks as well. While you can store and read many electronic books from your PDA or smartphone, a handheld ebook reader whose main function is for reading is really a better choice.

One of the main benefits of an electronic book reader and why it is better than other devices for reading digital publications is the technology that is used to display the words on the screen of most ereaders. This technology is know as electronic ink, electronic paper or simply Eink and closely simulates reading from a printed page in a traditional book. Reading from a device using Eink does not produce eye strain the way reading from a traditional computer screen does.

An Eink display is not back lit the way the LED screen on your smartphone or laptop is. Because of the way the display works, you can read from a device that uses Eink in bright sunlight, just as you could with a paper print book. Most smartphone displays are virtually unreadable in direct sunlight.

The Eink technology also contributes to great battery life for electronic book readers. While actually reading a book the only battery power used is when turning the page of your book. Once the page is displayed there is no drain on the battery.

The size of the screen on ebook readers is another reason for choosing a dedicated reader over using your smartphone. The average electronic book reader screen is 5 to 6 inches which is about the same size as most paperback books. Contrast that with the smaller size of most smartphones and you can see how it would be easier to read from an ebook reading device.

If you are an avid reader, you would be well advised to stop trying to read books from your smartphone and to invest in a dedicated ebook reading device. I think you will be glad you did.
